UNDERGROUND-AREA-OF-THE-CHURCH-OF-SANTA-MARIA-IN-VIA-LATA-(SECOND-PART)

Going on with the mysteries about this church and its underground area, let me tell why here it seems that lived people like Saint Peter or Saint Paul...

We know that since the Middle Ages this area was turn to a sacred and Christian church, or maybe monastery. There are a lot of literary sources which indicate how here vary Christian VIPs got in touch with this ancient and medieval place! According to some version, at the I century AD, here there was the home of Saint Luke. Moreover it seems that here he created his first "immagini acheropite": they are paintings about the Vergin Marie and Jesus painted by not human hands...  but for other sources here Saint Paul lived, and in those rooms an Angel inspired him to write down some of his famous Letters! There is something more, always about Saint Paul: maybe here Saint Paul was imprisoned. A Roman soldier lived in this place, and Saint Paul was his official prisioner. This tradition is confirmed by a column were we can read an inscription:"Verbum Dei non est allligatum" (the Word of God could not be enchained"). On this column Saint Paul was enchained, by his faith was so strong that he was able to convert the pagan heart of the Roman soldier. But for other versions Saint Peter lived here for some months, hosting other important members of the Roman Church at that time. Here Saint Peter baptized several people, and also an Angel helped him when the water, used for this ritual, was over. This Angel showed to Saint Peter a well, that it is possible to see, and thanks to the water he could go on with his baptisms. So, it seems that in some degree the underground area became the main location for several saints, visions and miracles. What will be the truth? #atourguiderome #underground #archeology #rome
