CASINA-CARDINAL-BESSARIONE
CASINA-CARDINAL-BESSARIONE

Not so far from the city centre you could find a pretty renaissance villa, owned by a famous cardinal. A way to understand how the ancient Romans used to live...

Some picture about the so called "Casina del Cardinal Bessarione", that is depicting a rare example of a suburban Renaissance villa in Rome. "Casina" means small private property, a place built outside the city centre owned by wealthy men who searched for peace for their souls and bodies. This "casina" is located along the ancien urban section of the historical Appian Way, close to the original city walls of Rome. The villa was owned by Bessarione, a famous cardinal who was very known in the Rome of the XIV century. At the time the Eternal City was not very large, and this area was really the outskirtsm so a perfect and peacefull place. Bessarione would like to come here, especially on summer time, in an area full of archeological staffs and remains which came from the ground, a quiet area completely surrounded by countryside, trees and small farms. The best way to read classical texts, historical books or similar activities. Keep in mind how Bessarione was also known as a scholar, a man who studied a lot the ancient times and the Roman and Greek writers. He was one of the advocates who thought that the Christian traditions could meet the ancient thoughts. A way to find a relationship between two different words. It is sure that Bessarione knew very well the customs of the ancient Romans, mainly of the wealthy men: they used to live outside the chaos of the city centre, owning wonderful and large private properties used to rest minds and bodies. Bessarione clearly followed the same custom, especially if we get in touc with the frescos of the rooms and the walls of this pretty villa: bucolic landscapes, natural elements, nice mythological figures...pagan characters for a villa owned by a cardinal, a man who knew how the ancient Romans used to live. This "casina" is a perfect way to understand how the Romans of the past got alive also in the Renaissance age... #unaguidaturisticaroma #atourguiderome #romeisus #Rome #casina#cardinale #Quattrocento #arte #pittura
