THE-MYTH-OF-APOLLO-AND-DAFNE-IMMORTALIZED-BY-BERNINI
THE-MYTH-OF-APOLLO-AND-DAFNE-IMMORTALIZED-BY-BERNINI

In the Museum of Villa Borghese there are the main sculpted groups by Bernini, like that one named "Apollo and Dafne". It is time to discover the real myth...

Around the 1622 Bernini realized what is according to me his best marble masterpiece: the "Apollo and Dafne". The naturalism, the realism, the feelings, the refinement are amazing, but today I would like to tell you something about the Greek myth used by Bernini as his inspiration, like several masters used to do. The artists with their personal styles were able to immortalize, thanks to colours, marble or other materials, some of the most famous ancient Romand and Greek myths. And now let me tell you why here we’re looking at Apollo in the act of following Dafne. Apollo was the Sun God, and the protector of the Arts, meanwhile Dafne was the Peneo’s daughter, a river. It could be strange for us, but in the past the Greeks used to personify natural elements, as rivers, oceans, seas etc. The history begins when Cupid, God of Love and Venus’ son, was trying to use the magical Apollo’s bow. But just the Sun God could handle it. So Apollo, following the words wrote down by the Latin writer Ovidio, told to Cupid:"What are you with weapons, insolent child? You satisfy to create with your tourch strange loves...". Cupid got so angry that he found a great revenge. He hit with his golden bolt Apollo, giving him an uncontrollable love for the first creature that he was going to see. In the meantime he hit with a lead bolt Dafne. In this case the arrow brings you to refuse the Love, escaping by that. So, when Apollo was Dafne falling in love with her, the poor girl could not accept it. It is the reason why she escaped. But Apollo was always a God, so Dafne was not able to escape... This is the reason why Dafne, who saw Apollo standing close to her, praied Peneo, his father. And in a fantastic way she started to transform into a...tree! It is the moment immortalized by Bernini in his incredible marble statue. Her fingers are becoming leaves and her legs trunk. Bernini was able to fix the best moment of a mythologycal episode, the moment with the strongest pathos and drama. But now there is something more, the end! Dafne became a bay tree, which was used by the Romans as a symbol of power. So Ovidio, in order to justify this tradition, decided to find a curious end for this history. When Apollo so Dafne in her new form, he was always fall in love with her. So let me tell you what the Sun God claimed, in front of his loved leaves:"Just because you could not be my bride you will be my tree. My mane, my quiver, oh my love, will be adorn with you. You will crown the happy generals, when the chorus will start to sing the triumph and the Capitoline Hill will see long parades. You, as a faithful keeper, will be hang up on the doors of the Augustus’ home"... #romeisus #Rome#Roma #atourguiderome #unaguidaturisticaroma
