FONTANA-DELLA-TERRINA

Could an ordinary fountain have a long and strange life? If we talk about the "Fontana della Terrina yes, of course!

The so called "Fontana della Terrina" (Fountain of the Tureen), is set in front of the Chiesa Nuova, that is one of the main example of Baroque age in Rome (try to go inside, looking at the great frescos by Pietro da Cortona). This small fountain is made of a white marble base covered by a strange travertine lid. It is the origin of the nickname "Terrina" (tureen), due to this unusual element which was added later. Why? Imagine how this fountain was originally designed by the architect Giacomo della Porta at the 1581. He projected several fountains (almost twenty), followed the wills of the Pope Gregory XIII Boncompagni, who tried to improve the water supply of Rome. The architect Giacomo della Porta designed a fine white marble base, don’t following the current street level due to the low pressure of the water. The problem was that the fountain was placed in Piazza Campo de’ Fiori, where still today there is a famous and traditional market. Imagine how dirty could be this area! Food, fruits, vegetables, thousand of people who came here everyday. Sometimes, according to the chronicles, the merchants used to put their vegetables on the water of the fountain, to keep them fresh! A real shame for this renaissance masterpiece. A shame which last until the 1622, when the Pope Gregory XV Ludovisi commissioned this travertine lid in order to find a solution. Over the centuries the fountains was left on its original location, in Campo de’ Fiori, until the 1889 when a new monument, that could be seen still today, was set there: the bronze statue of the philosopher Giordano Bruno, who was burned alive here, due to a public execution, four centuries ago. It is the reason why the fountain was moved, and it remained inside an ordinary warehouse until the 1924, when it was moved agains here, at its current location, in front of the Chiesa Nuova. Do you see how manny troubles could have a fountain of Rome? #romeisus #Rome #water #fountain
