THE FRESCOED PALACE AT THE SANT'EUSTACHIO DISTRICT

At the Sant'Eustachio district in Rome you will admire the walls of a noble palace of the renaissance age that is completely painted...

Among the most beautiful painted buildings of Rome there is the small palace of the XVI century which is located in Piazza di Sant'Eustachio, that is in the homonymous small ward in front of the homonymous church. Being a tour guide it's a pleasure to share a surprise like this one, something that will understand you how in Rome everything could be remarkable.

This building became the private property of the Tizio from Spoleto, master of chamber of Pope Paul III Farnese. We are in the second half of the XVI century and it was not uncommon to call various artists to decorate the facades of the private property of the nobility. In this case, for the pictorial decoration Federico Zuccari was called: he was a very active painter at the time and one of the most famous artists (a man who commissioned a strange building here in Rome). On the outside walls of this pretty palace we can find the Baptism and the Martyrdom of Sant'Eustachio, who was the young man from Rome who saw a Cross on the top of the stage of a deer. Then, being converted to Christianity, he was persecuted and killed. This symbolism could be found everywhere in this pretty and small district of Rome, and another example is the nice Fountain of the Books, that is few steps far from this gorgeous building.

Not only that, because on the central strip between the two plans, under the windows of the upper floor, there are two female figures that are, respectively, the Fortress (left, with the column in his hand) and Justice (right). Complete the pictorial decoration of the great symbol of the Doctors that stands out in the middle, wanted by Pope Pio IV Medici in the second half of the ’500. Even the building itself, with its architectural elements, is beautiful. For example, the windows with architraves which area alternated with lilies, symbols of the Farnese family. So I can say that this painted building is a very nice beauty and surprise in Rome. Another reason why you should visit the Eternal City, a reason why I'm happy to be a local tour guide here.
