These are just some of the artifacts discovered in the course of the years, and now on display in the showcases of the new metro station San Giovanni of the third line of Rome. Come here and spend a few moments to look at what you managed to recover it attests, once again, the extraordinary stratification of Rome. It is a keyword to understand the soul of the Eternal City, something that could tell us how much the underground of the city is a veritable time machine that incorporates art works and objects from different eras.
And so it happened that by digging to create the tunnels, reaching a depth of 27 metres (where are now the docks), layer after layer was uncovered a new world, a piece of roman history. From ceramic dishes painted of the XIX centuries up to medieval elements, from coins or jewels of the late imperial up to the remains of a basket (amazing) or instruments from the work of the I-II century a.D.. Thanks to these discoveries, it was understood how in the area prospered, two millennia ago, a big farm, and the findings confirm this! It's amazing how, after all, just look down and dig a little to learn about the history of the Eternal City. It's amazing how the soil of Rome is an immense treasure that crosses the centuries.
Try to imagine, stopping for a moment, as some of the objects exhibited in these beautiful display cases have been simple work tools or household objects then in common use. For those of us in the modern era, instead, become real masterpieces, the result of excavations for a modern metro station. Rome, moreover, is not only the emperors, or the Republic, but rather a territory in which we passed through the tribes with ancient, neolithic villages and prehistoric men, of which a little something has been discovered... From the XIX century up to prehistoric times! In short, Rome is like a huge lasagna, if you'll allow me the term, with its different layers and are able to show, as in those picture, the incredible and long history of a city and a thousand year old territory...
