KLIMT AND HIS WOMEN

The so called "Three ages of the woman" is a Klimt's masterpieces located at the famous National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome...

Here is another work of art from the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome, specialized in the art of the last century! Don't forget that even the modern or contemporary art is able to produce wonders and masterpieces, like in this case. Ready to follow a local tour guide to discover something more about this special artistic style?

Here you can see the "Three Ages of Woman", one of the works of art by the austrian Klimt. We are at the beginning of the new century, when art began to escape from the usual canons (painting - sculpture - architecture) to embrace other segments of production, such as the design and furnishings. And Klimt, in his artistic language, followed this tren: we see three female figures (from left to right, an elderly lady, a woman and a girl) representing the duration of the life time, in a female way. Interesting to note how the physical properties of the three women reflect, in all and for all, their ages.

Look, for example, the female figure on the left: the curved back makes think us about the hardness of the work that the woman, now elderly, has done over the years. Her mummified skin is in contrast to the smooth skin, smoother and lighter of the young woman and the girl, the latter almost abandoned at the first, in a gesture that seems maternal. Interesting to note how the figure of the elderly seems almost to embrace the other two. Apparently it is as if she wants to include the other two, as if, in a certain sense, is saying goodbye before leaving their space. Not only because the three figures may also have a vision of life completely different: if the old woman covers the face in a dramatic gesture that almost seems to emphasize her fear of death (as if you do not wish to see it), eyes closed and expression serene and quiet of the other two figures seem, instead, to almost accept with joy what the future reserves them.

Don't forget how the figure of the woman was important for Klimt: a woman was seen as a generator of life, but also, not in this case, as a deceiver and a temptress. Fully two-dimensional, without perspective or depth (as what is of fundamental there is is not the style but the subject represented), we notice how the background is colorful and arabesque, with many of the spirals that always return to the idea of life. A work that is remarkable for the time, which characterizes one of the aspects of the Art Nouveau style, current of thought, not only artistic, that will take place at the beginning of the ’900. In this way, thanks to this masterpiece, we can understand again how the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome is a reality that shows another style, a way to do art that could be far from our imagination. A style that, sometimes, provoked scandals, as you can read here...
